Caring for red parrots
I received a query from cheeky bear on care of red parrots.
Red parrots are not cheap. However they are not expensive either. In purchasing red parrots, make sure the fish is not deformed and the color is red. Never mind if the size is small. It will soon grow. A small fish is cheaper than a big fish.
Many people buy in sets of nine. An auspicious figure some say for fengshui. Basically the aquarium must be big enough for the fish. The water is everything.
Get a good water filter. When changing water, do not change more than 40% of the water at a time. If it is the first time, let the water settle for a few days first before releasing the fish into the aquarium. The longer the better. Let the filter be on even though there is no fish.
For me, after the habitat had stabilized I added water plants. The red parrots love to nibble on the leaves. However some discourage me from doing this. It dirties the aquarium.
I rear one scavenger fish in the aquarium. It is like the maid. It keeps the aquarium clean.
Ask the dealer to recommend you a good brand of fish feed. They all look the same but the prices are different. Pay a little more for the better ones. It keeps the water clean and the fish will thrive.

omg, i thought red parrot is a parrot.
obviously it’s a fish after reading this post =.=
paise for being such a suagu.
silai = housewife e.g: http://www.chanlilian.net/2006/04/03/so-you-define-silai-housewife-please/
Oh, Thanks so much for the information. Now I guess we know what we did wrong. We put the fish into new water. We did not let the water settled as you said and also the filter was only bought the same day as the fish. Hmm.. Many boo-boo. Anyway, when hubby gets back from outstation, we’ll try again. Gheez.. Sounds like we’re trying for something else instead of rearing red parrots. Will keep you posted on our red parrot project (if I can get my hands on a digital camera *Hint*Hint*) LOL. Thanks again.
good luck
Those are precious tips to save precious pets. Have a great time rearing them.
Soli lah Ah Beng..I always find the parrot fish veli ugly lah. It’s like “ngau tau tap mah mei” (like a cow head mismatch to a horse tail. I rather have “flower horn” though I dont fancy them either. I rear Japanese and local kois in my pond. I find them very beautiful, easy to maintain, good for feng shui and therapeutic!
As for the scavanger..they are useless. Doesnt really “vaccum clean” the pond like they should. In fact my “pei pa yue” the scavanger is almost tripple the size of my kois now.about 2 feet big (200x bigger than when I first bought it years ago). Too sayang to dispose it due to its unusual size
i must look out for yr fish posts. my svavenger has disappeared. i suspect my bigger red parrots have eaten him up
recently. aiyo susah hati to dispose of such a big fish. pai sim ( bad heart ) osolah. if i were u i would let it survive until the end of its days. u will get merit for it
I heard that fish can help you prevent unlucky events from befalling you. I wonder if this is true and if only certain fish can do the job or any fish also can?
when i read the title i thought it was about a bird…
