I am supposed to be on a diet but it isn’t easy when the spirit is willing and the flesh is weak. I was invited out last night. I thought it would be another session of a few kongpia or something but we ended up eating chicken wings, mee mamak and sandwiches at Tanahmas Hotel. I never expected it or I would have brought along my camera ![]()

Weekend snapshot – rhinoceros beetle/kumbang badak sipping water
09.22
This week I highlight a approx one year old rhinoceros beetle taking a sip of water. It could easily fly off when I took the pics but it perhaps it felt safe or perhaps it was distracted by the water.
Mission accomplished
Even in nature, nothing is perfect. This specimen has a deformed horn
The rhinoceros beetles (or Rhino beetle) are a subfamily (Dynastinae) of beetles in the family of scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae).
They are among the largest of beetles, so named because of the characteristic horns borne by the males of most species in the group. The male beetles use their horns in mating battles against other males.
Their larva stage is long, several years in some species. The larvae feed on rotten wood while the adults feed on nectar, plant sap and fruit. Rhinoceros beetle larvae are sometimes fried and eaten as a bush delicacy.
Rhinoceros beetles are also the strongest animals on the planet, proportionally. They can lift up to 850 times their own weight. To put this into perspective, if a human of average height and weight had the strength of the rhinoceros beetle, it would be able to lift a 65 ton object, for example, an Abrams Tank.

Character : nine year old boy in a primary school
Benny : I am no longer afraid during recess or after school. It is ok when the teachers are in the classroom. I always worry because auntie is never at the school gate when the bell rings for dismissal. She says it is safer to come when there is less traffic.
I told the big boy, “My daddy has talked to the head mistress about it. I will not give you any more money. This money is for me to eat during recess. I will not lie for you any more.” ( p.s. the daddy did no such thing )
The year five student was scared. He hasn’t approached me for a few days already. My daddy was wrong to leave me alone in the school.

Day 71 of my 4 day cycle keep fit program
A buddy told me technically it shouldn’t be day 71 as we don’t do gym everyday. At best it is day 40 or less if we only count the days we hit the gym. Anyway, numbers are just a technical thingy
Even if I didn’t hit the gym, I still needed to control my diet etc.

Lions Peace Poster Contest
09.20
I have been busy today playing ‘chauffeur’ to a friend who is in town. His son is taking part in a peace poster competition. I went with him to the Sacred Heart Chinese Primary School.
Many excited school kids were already there.

I found out this song on my friend’s blog. It is so cool. Perhaps a better word is so ‘different’ from the usual fare I hear
Photohunters : road
09.19
The theme for this week’s photohunt is road. My entries this week are the following.
In a rural setting, the roads are very narrow.
The roads are very safe too. In rainy weather the humble umbrella is useful to keep away the rain.
When the road is flooded , poor daddy has to do what has to be done. I think my son enjoyed the piggy back ride more than he minded the flood waters.

The journey between towns can be quite an experience. It sometimes feels like every bone in the body has been broken. The bus makes pit stops so that the passengers can rest, have some refreshment and make a visit to the loo

Unfortunate bus.
Sometimes, the bus cannot withstand the rough road conditions and this is what happens
We were mosquito fodder for hours before help arrived. I was commenting to a passenger we were lucky to be alive. I had forgotten he was a pastor in the excitement of the moment. He said it had nothing to do with luck. He said to praise God. I definitely felt humbled and awed at how blessed we all were to escape unscathed in this accident.
I went food crazy today and went berserk

I cannot afford RM1000.00 for a good cause
09.18
Another day in my life. I was at a dinner last night when I was approached by some men to help in a ‘noble’ cause. Apparently they were approached by a mainland Chinese woman for help. She told them she had lost everything when she lost all the items she had for sale. She had only the clothes she had on and not a single sen in the whole world.
