Is there no solution for the floods in Sibu?

From Untitled Album

While I trust the government has plans to alleviate the flood problem, at the same time I see that its flood remedial efforts have been successful but in a way it has been counter productive too. The new raised roads have caused a host of new problems. The flood waters are now being hindered from flowing freely and the waters now have been displaced and sent to the houses instead.

From Untitled Album

After a slight downpour. It could be due to the raised level of Jalan Tun Haji Openg

I appreciate being able to travel along the major arteries in town but at the same time, houses never flooded are now being flooded. Some housing estates have now become water storage areas. :(

What are the real solutions to the problem? The RM230 million will be inadequate when we think of the new problems caused which need to be solved.

Have you noticed how Sibu folks nowadays becoming flood conscious and constantly looking at the water level in the drains? I believe we have a right to a flood free life. In the past a major flood used to be once a decade phenomenon. Nowadays it happens so frequently. Even when there is normal weather with no excessive rain etc.

From Untitled Album

At the same time it is not just a government problem. The people in Sibu must cooperate by keeping the drains clear and flowing by not throwing garden refuse and rubbish into the drains.

But not all is bleak, thank God. The good news

I know how it feels. Every time it rains heavily here, I worry that my pa’s place will get flooded again.

I check my drains every day during the flooding season of the month

I’m sorry to hear about this. Floods are a common problem in Malaysia and I can emphatise with you.

This post was written in a moment of despair :) but i shouldn’t be so pessimistic to be honest. With money, lots can be done or undone.

  3. Ken says:

    I emphatise with you too.

I hope one day the situation will clear up in Sibu.

    Stay cool champ.

With RM230.8 million we expect some improvement of course, including my area :)

  4. Twilightzone says:

Time you stand to be Mayor of Sibu to clear all My Longkang woes!

    road sweeper more likely :)

  5. Che-Cheh says:

Ever thought of shifting to another place? higher ground place?

My place is considered high ground. But they raised the level of the roads trapping the water from flowing away

    Shucks, that sucks :(
And brainless people seem to be everywhere, sigh… :(

    littering is never good

There must be a solution, if somehow the government would focus on it, and get the expertise required to solve it, once and for all. I think it will require a master plan.

I really feel bad for those effected. It must be horrible to face this so often.

i believe there will b better days ahead.

Sibu its juz too famous of it flooding system since few years ago already. I wonder what gonna happen if the global warming issue reli comes to fate. Is sibu gonna be an underwater town? Im worried…

in our country, it is always happen first n then think about it.

So sad about the woes of flooded homes in Sibu. Yes our Minister is right we cannot blame everything on the politicians.

The people must be responsible for their own rubbish which clog the drains and cause stagnation of the water. the timber companies ruthlessly caused erosion in the upper reachers (which the ministers did not know about re: James Masing). And the express boats caused the erosion in the lower reachers (before the River Board was responsibly established)..and so on and so forth.
Should we blame all the “blind people who did not see” all these happening in the last fifty years!

May be it is too late. However if every one can claim 150 000 ringgit as compensation and move out of Sibu if that is the price of land now in Sibu that would be good. But most people are just too poor to buy a new house somewhere…
Whose social responsibility is Sibu’s worsening situation? SUPP should fight for this….I am sure they can win with so much trust put on the party.

look at the pic in the post and you can understand how I feel…betrayed by the people who wanted to help. the govt meant well but somehow the whole plan backfired

  10. CK says:

That’s the funniest joke. Don’t blame every ill on SUPP. When there is something good, it sure will be SUPP effort and not others. That’s the politician talk. The drains and roads are really lousy. So many holes and uneven road in Sibu. Drive from Wong King How road to Farley is really a pain in the ass!! Please do something about the road, our beloved minister, Wong!

there was a wildly hilarious joke in the papers today about the perceived reasons for an unbalanced civil service in terms of ethnicity

  11. Awang says:

Alright!alright!!!vote for me next election & I will talk to CM ask Ting Pek Kiing to build FLOATING CITY in SIBU.

I prefer to vote for a person like you. It was meant to b a joke but true, when i think abt it, if given a choice between you n him, i would choose you :)

  12. If the water level reach my home, I will leave Sibu

if that is the case, you must probably live in a flood free zone. but still in our professional lives n social lives we still cannot avoid the flood prone areas. let us just hope you never have to leave Sibu :)

My Aunts’ house are infected too, and they just renovated the house.. I understand your tiredness..

  14. wuching says:

    go swimming beng!

  15. johnny ong says:

yeah, the public has to help out in ensuring cleanliness also. its the rubbish thrown by the public that has partly contributed to the flood

  16. Ru says:

Oh dear, hope they solve the problem soon.

these things take time but fortunately there is now some light at the end of the tunnel
