Dried prawns are a treasured commodity for its taste. Sometimes consumption exceeds demand. Today, the prices stand at RM60.00 per kilogram. Everything produced in Belawei I was told is sold out often within the day.

This lady whom I presume is the boss will be busy too. Here she is seen choosing the right firewood for the ‘bilik salai’ or room where the prawns are dried.

She then has to get the fire going.

Left over prawn shells can be used as fertilizer or recycled as fish food when mixed with other materials.

    shit!!!why got cat over there….!!!! @.@
i thought they dried up the prawn by the nature source like the heat from SUN… how many trees we need to cut down for this industry also??

the cat is on duty keeping away the mice. the forest is a renewable resource for the local folks and a valuable source of income for those whose lives depend on it for an income. when they use firewood for example they help conserve non renewable resources like diesel, petrol, charcoal etc

the prawns are dried at very high temperatures so it is safe to eat the dried prawns without cooking.

Nice dried prawns. But the price is expensive. I heard people said Belawei has many nice seafood. They always caught big prawns if it is the prawn season.

    everything is also fresh
