I am so excited. I just can’t wait to hop over to Premier Hotel for its latest June/July promotions. What I find irresistible of course would be the Penang Assam Laksa.

Laksa is a popular spicy noodle soup which originated from the Peranakan culture or more well known as the Baba and Nyonya culture. It incidentally is a merger of Chinese and Malay elements found in Malaysia and Singapore.

Some believe the name laksa dates it back to Hindi/Persian lakhshah, referring to a type of vermicelli. It might also have been derived from the Chinese word “la sha” pronounced “latsa” in Cantonese), meaning “spicy sand” due to the ground dried prawns which makes the gravy taste extremely sandy. An unlikely probability is that the name laksa is derived from the similar sounding word “dirty” in Hokkien due to its appearance.

Penang assam ( tamarind ) laksa is essentially a mackerel (ikan kembung) soup and its main distinguishing feature is the assam or tamarind which gives the soup a sour taste. The process begins with the fish being poached and then flaked. Other must haves in this dish are lemongrass, galangal (lengkuas) and chilli.

To further adorn this dish, garnishes like mint, pineapple slices, thinly sliced onion, he-ko, a thick sweet prawn paste and torch ginger flower are used.

Other than the delectable Penang assam laksa, also on the promotion list are chicken rice, and Sarawak laksa. Reasonably priced from RM 5++ for the chicken rice and RM6.00+ for the Sarawak laksa and RM7.50 + for the Penang assam laksa.

What are you doing still sitting on your chair. Get off your ass and go to Premier Hotel for lunch while the promotion is still on. ;) For your info the Premier Hotel version of Penang assam laksa is the luxury one guaranteed to whet your appetites. It is served as a flavoursome vermicelli soup with fresh prawns, wolf herring flakes, preserved cuttlefish, fish ball, egg and assorted vegetables, accompanied with prawn paste.

The chicken rice is available from Monday to Friday daily from 11:30 a.m. till 2:00 p.m. It is not available if the day falls on a public holiday.
The Sarawak Laksa and Penang Asam Laksa are served only on every Saturday, Sunday and Public Holiday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
