My Longkang

I received this video via facebook. Thanks LKB. It is a Pantene commercial. The heroine is of course a beautiful girl but she is deaf. She overcomes all adversities to prove to the world she can overcome and success comes her way. It is a typical Hollywood thingy with an adversary ( the girl on the piano and socety in general ) and a good friend and supporter ( the street busker ) being beaten up.

Everybody loves this type of stories. Brings echos of Susan Boyle. The scene where they put a super big land cruiser behind her blaring the horn to ask her to make way underscores the point they want to make that she is deaf.

Then, she almost never makes the performance in the contest and she makes it at the last moment. She performs beautifully and her hair becomes part of the universe and in fact is the universe while her music plays on and on dazzling all and sundry.

Towards the end, the judges in a scene reminiscent of Britain’s Got Talent sit in their places wide mouthed in amazement. Somebody stands up, claps and soon there is a resounding ovation for her clap, clap, clap.

I have asked myself in what ways do I shine. I like to be on stage, I like public speaking, I like writing rubbish like this etc but I don’t shine. It is just a matter of ‘like’ or interest but there is no talent whatsoever. I am not a born athlete and received a D for art for my A-levels. In university, I studied stuff which were not of my interest and basically I never shone

I am a klutz on the dance floor. Neither can I sing. My talent perhaps was that often people gravitate to me and want to make friends with me. But that is not a talent. Perhaps a better word is approachable or easy going. Maybe on the day of my conception, the spirits responsible for endowing talents were on leave.

I notice everybody else is wealthy with talent. In what ways do you shine?

The following is listed on mylongkang’s wall of fame for their talents. Of course I can’t list all as there are too many so I have listed ten ( 10 ) in no particular order.

1.Philip : the camera has become his paint brush and he creates art using his camera.
2.Superman : he can solve any problem with the computer. I sometimes wonder if he loves his wife or his computer more Oops I wonder if he is married.
3.Adino : he doesn’t listen to music like I do. He creates music. I am awed.
4.Lillian : she has brought blogging to new levels since she took up a course in citizen journalism
5.Anton :he writes beautifully. I sometimes wonder how deep a reservoir of creativeness he possesses as he never seems to run out of ideas. His pieces all reflect the care and effort he puts in to make it a good read.
6.Ken: A Takashi lookalike, Ken is a doting father and writes well. But that is not the reason he is on mylongkang’s wall of fame. He is a creative person, art director and talented in ad design aka colorful layouts and whacky ideas
7.Twilight Zone : I am still impressed with his art work which he showed on his blog although he insists was done in a hurry. Being modest is a virtue in Chinese society.
8.Dong: Reading his blog is an adventure. Armchair tourism at its best. He brings us along on his travels through his words and his pics.
9.Irene : Irene has successfully combined blogging with her ambition which is to open a boutique. In this particular case, an online boutique. I have only praises for her. As a mother of a toddler and a baby, it wasn’t easy but she has made it
10. Yan: her love for the Lord has inspired her to write many inspiring pieces mirroring her life in Christ
