I have always been crazy about Penang assam laksa. Something about the fish soup that I have never quite forgotten. Just thinking about it made me hunger for it. That is how I ended up at a cafe in town waiting for abana and victor

Our target was the Sarawak laksa and Penang assam laksa.

From food

The service was good and the Penang assam laksa arrived soon after. At RM7.50 it was not expensive.

From food

Abana’s Sarawak laksa arrived soon after.

From food

Victor rushed down from the airport to join us.

It was a great time to just unwind and exchange tips about photography. As for the food, the drinks were okay. We had hot choc and iced lemon tea.

If you expect great Penang assam laksa, eat the original by the roadside Penang assam laksa. Throw in the price of a return air ticket to Penang too. :) This luxury Sibu version of the Penang assam laksa is okay and some of my friends say it is fabulous and does bear some resemblance to the original dish. I suppose the original version would not have gone down well with the local people with its thick, aromatic prawn sauce and abundant fish flakes. The Sarawak laksa tasted the way Sarawak laksa should taste.

I still hanker for the Asam Laksa of my youth… plenty of fish in the gravy and lots of ulam! Nowadays… everything also cut cost.

in this particular case, there was little fish :)
