4% GST, middle aged and pensioner inflation worries

Many are aware of the impending 4% proposed Goods and Services tax ( GST ) but few have any real idea what it is all about. What they know is that the good times are over.

Consumers are quick to blame the businessmen. Businessmen tell me they try to absorb increased costs of production for the simple reason consumers just don’t have the purchasing power or for the bigger fish : reluctant to commit themselves.

The cost of living in our country is not low when we contrast it with our income per capita. With the introduction of GST, the low purchasing power is further decreased. As expected, local business volume will shrink.

A pensioner told me he found it difficult at first during the last round of inflation last year but after some time, he adjusted and made changes to his family’s lifestyle and reached a new equilibrium. But this time, he told me he has no more corners to cut. “What can i do?,” he asked me. I have no answers.

He thought he was comfortable with his savings and investment. He had not foreseen the diminishing value of money or the increasing rate of inflation.

Somebody is blaming somebody, everybody and everybody is blaming somebody and everybody but this pointing of fingers isn’t helping anybody. The young I expect are optimistic but the older ones, what is your take on this? How are you going to cope?

This is a rubbish post. A nobody ranting and worrying about uncertain times ahead. A nobody who can’t avoid what is coming in the days ahead. We just have to live and go through it. Lest I am accused of exaggerating the circumstances, I can only say we live in a different world. Obviously what worries me does not worry you. What does not worry you does not necessarily not worry me. To me the worries are very real. i have every right to rant here. It is my blog.

    tekkaus,
I have the same sentiments as yours. But the damage has been done and we’re already paying for it. Let’s hope we can give them the boot before it gets worse… because I think it will. One man one vote, we should make it count.

If the government is charge the GST, I think they should pay us some money just like what they did when our petrol price rise to RM2.70.

hi, let me join in this discussion about tax and increasing cost of living.
u mentioned a pensioner. the only pensioners i know in malaysia, are govt pensioners and they are well paid, because it is index linked to inflation. malaysia is too young to have private pensioners.but if there are private pensioners i stand corrected.
my father was a govt servant, and so got a govt pension, and all his medical bills were paid by the govt and his pension went up with inflation. now of course inflation is down but he was very comfortable with what he got in his pension. And he is not a high earner while he was working being a lowly lecturer in a teacher training college.
We his children contribute to big one off expenses like house repair and renovation but he managed very well with day to day expenses. but my parents are very frugal. They dont smoke or drink alchohol. They dont eat out and that saves a lot of money.
the pensioner who told u he cannot cope anymore… has he got children? and are they working? if they are working why they cannot give him money?
If u have a young family it will be tougher for u. If u r working u can cope. But if u have been feeling rich before and buying ur children everything they want, stop it now. Stop buying their love. You may fool urself into saying u want the best for them. don’t believe that. when u were young u did not have thse things they have now, and u were happy so why do u think ur children will be different?
From young let them know that what they want costs money and if they have it they have to do without somewhere else.
If u have been spoiling them before it will be more difficult for them to change and accept less, but better u do it now than when they are older and get influenced by their richer friends and out of your control.

better tell them clearly that they are supposed to help with money when u grow old and they start earning money. Teach that clearly to them so they know what is expected of them.
My mother taught us that by saying to us…’ help your younger brothers and sisters and each other when u start earning’. And i got from there that i must help my parents when i start earning.
The GST is only for goods and services. it is something u can avoid if u dont buy the goods and services.

The business man is having a tougher time, as people will cut down on their purchase, and he wont be able to put up the costs to pay for the GST tax.he deserves more sympathy but i doubt many will have any sympathies left over to give to him. haha.
Anyway businesses will come and go it is the natural nature of doing business.
Naturally all the above comes with a disclaimer that it is my view and nobody have to agree with it if they dont want to. haha.
Tell us how u would cope instead.
