Durians are the king of fruits. Every year many Malaysians look at durians for sale at the roadside but hesitate to venture near because they know they do not know how to choose a good durian.

Aroma is a good indicator. If a durian exudes no smell, chances are that it is not a good choice.
Shake it. If there is no sound of movement it is probably not ripe. If there is too much movement, it probably means the seeds are huge but there is actually very little edible flesh on the fruit itself. The weight should be light relative to its size.

Look for breaks in the skin. It could be due to squirrels or worms. Look at the stalk. There shouldn’t be any sign it has been brought down unnaturally with the help of a knife attached to a long stick. To do that observe the durian stalk closely.

Look for signs that the fruit has sprung open. Occasionally the sellers hold them together with pieces of string. Or hide signs with dried leaves. Avoid such durians. They might have been good yesterday or the day before but definitely not fresh now.
Many senses are involved. The sense of touch, smell, sight and hearing in choosing a good durian, don’t you agree? How do you choose a durian?

The durian expert. He was able to choose the fruit which was judged the best from all the fruits in the pile. Congratulations!

A smile from SJ =)
I come from an era where durians were judged by the tree (from Kampong Nangka or Sg. Bidut) and we would even know which tree in the Kampong…We based our purchses on trust. And this was honoured.
The durians were never wrong.
Our durians belonged to the sallers or middlemen and sometimes we were told that one particular tree had been total “ta pao” by a tycoon. So no chance to eat that.
Later when timber money came in no one could eat and buy durians in this way any more. All the good durian trees were booked.
Then development came in and the durian trees of Kampong Nangka made way for housing…..Population explosded and durians came from all over the place now…
I always felt good when my dad took us to the kampong to buy durians freshly fallen from the trees…
those were the days when you get real value for money…like I said…you even could thank the trees for giving you the durians…
I have been cheated in Kuching …at 40 ringgit per fruit….I should have been wiser…and asked about the tree and the kampong…hahahaha.
hahahahahha and I shall remember all those tricks…:)
I been taught not to choose those perfect looking durian. Instead looks for the distorted or “cacat” looking durian.
Better still, bring own continer and ask them to open it on the spot. Bring away the good one and leave behind the bad one
Wow… very mouth watering posts these few days!
