I have wanted to try out Baba and Siam Cafe for some time now after reading about it on other blogs.

It is situated near the new terminal for outstation buses. When we arrived at exactly six, we were the first customers but soon a steady stream of customers trickled in. Business was good.. No complaints about the staff either. Attentive, polite and courteous. I loved the atmosphere in the place. I saw those big cushions and immediately grabbed one to sit on.

I ordered this jiu hu char. I don’t quite know what happened. There was no meat or jiu hu at all in the dish. Perhaps they thought we wanted all vegetarian food as we had ordered a plate of vegetarian fried rice too.

Anyway they gave us these pieces of cabbage to accompany the jiu hu char . Quite a disappointment.

They should have provided us with this instead. The usual way to eat jiu hu char is to put the jiu hu char in the leaf, add a bit of sambal, wrap it up and eat the whole thing whole. The waiter was surprised too when I asked for the sambal which was supposed to come with the jiu hu char. They brought us some sambal but it was not what I expected. The drink was enough for two persons.

Vegetarian fried rice. This was too much for two persons. Nothing special about this other than eliminating meat or similar.

This was divine.
We paid a total of RM33.20 for two. Was it worth it? I guess it wasn’t too bad. Would I go again? I am not sure. I just might visit from time to time to sample more of their dishes.
When one chooses a name such as Baba and Siam, customers expect food with the influence of Nyonya and Baba cuisine and of course Thai. It is not easy to do fusion food. Sometimes it just comes across as non authentic. Maybe my expectations were too high.
Don’t take my word for it. Go and try out the place some time. Be prepared to pay a little more than some other places in town though. Remember dining is not just about the food but the overall experience, the ambience, comfort etc..

we call it lettuce wrap here but i believe inspired from Asian cuisine as well, but am sure nothing near the genuine cuisine there. is the last one sweet rice with mango, ice cream and nuts? looks so yummy!
happy new year bengbeng and family!!
too bad you got disappointed with the dish you tried but at least something pleased you big time =)
I think I would like to try this restaurant. It looks good in your photos.
In Miri for a well appointed restaurant we normally pay around 20 ringgit per person (without fish dish).
Hotel – 50 ringgit.
Five foot way type – about 10 ringgit a shared dinner. again depending on what you order.
Seafood restuarants of course can go for the kill. I once was presented a hefty bill because of the prawns.
With all the economic anxieties…we have to ask first before we feel the pinch.
For me – I choose my friendly outlets which provides a personal touch.
Happy new year!! Here’s to a good year with good food and good relations…..blessings from God.
At least it looks good!
Awesome place. I thought it is called baba & nyonya. Ha
