We have been noticing lots of bees buzzing around. We were thinking it was due to the uncertain weather or something. That was until a few days ago when we parted the curtain in one of the rooms. Then suddenly I saw bees which looked ferocious to me from the other side of the window. Perhaps they were disturbed by the movement.

I felt genuine fear. I mean a bee hive clinging to a drainpipe which drains water from the roof. It was about the size of a two or three year old child. I don’t know how long it has been there. After reading stories of fatalities from bee stings we decided to take action.

We asked for assistance. Late at night when it was pitch dark, they parted the curtains, opened the windows a little and sprayed TEN tins of Ridsect. The bees were angry and there seemed an uncountable number of them. Maybe thousands? The noise was very loud. Then slowly more and more bees started dropping to the ground.

Some flew here and there in the darkness. They had protected themselves by covering themselves as much as they could with a hat, mosquito netting and such stuff. After a while when they were sure all the bees had either flown off or died, a stick was sent out of the window to prod the hive until it disintegrated. The smell of honey was rich, pungent and ‘wonderful’. But we could not salvage the honey due to the Ridsect which had been sprayed which was a waste. It could have fetched quite a bit of money.

The next step was sweeping away the dead bees which formed a thick carpet on the floor.
