Beware ATM/credit card fraud

I was at the bank this morning and I saw an unusual notice. It warned customers of a gang preying on innocent victims.

I asked around and this is the story I heard. I cannot verify the truth of this story but it never hurts to be safe rather than sorry. This is a new twist to their old modus operandi. A man/woman would call an innocent victim and tell him/her that their credit card in XXX bank has an outstanding amount of debt. The credit card holder would then panic as he or she doesn’t have a credit card from XXX Bank.

The caller would then advise the credit card holder to telephone ‘Bank Negara’ for help. The unsuspecting victim would then call the given ‘Bank Negara’ number. Somebody would pick up the call and listen to the case closely and then try to get said victim’s personal particulars and warn victims not to inform the police nor the bank involved for three days so as not to jeopardize investigations.

The next step would be to get said victim to go to the bank but how the story unfolds after that I don’t know. What I have heard today really gave me a scare. You have been forewarned.

Practice caution at all times when receiving phone calls from strangers alleging this or that or making unusual promotions or special offers.

yeah this is true. my colleague got the same call a few weeks ago telling her about an outstanding debt of a credit card from a bank which she doesnt have. and told her to call a number. but she already suspected something is not right because she conversed with the caller in english but he keep talking in cantonese. she told the caller she will find out from the bank herself and cut off the conversation. and the bank told her that call was a scam. it pays to be alert.

It is true.I was told the same thing.I called Bank Negara and he talked in Malay at first and then lapsed into Mandarin. He told me to keep it secret as Bank Negara needed the secrecy to carry out siasatan/investigations.I went to my ATM as instructed. He called.I told him the amount was still there. He asked me how much I had in my account as he needed to check indeed all was really there.I said a really small figure. He sort of lost interest in me after that.It shocked me he didn’t realize I was lying to him.He then asked me to change my pin number or something.I then went to a bank officer. He checked and said I didn’t have a credit account with their bank.

Thanks for highlighting this issue.I almost lost my life savings.I don’t want others to lose their savings too.Let everybody know about this.
