Now that the school holidays have begun, I am going nuts. Benghui is so terribly bored even though he spends the nights doing wushu with his friends. He is always asking to go out to look for entertainment. At his age, I was already cycling to the beach, climbing hills, doing stuff which I can’t imagine I would let Benghui do unsupervised today. There are few kids unsupervised where I live and everybody just drives in and out of the compound and then locks the gate. Very little interaction opportunities for him.
A bright spot on the horizon though. The SMC library now allows each card holder to borrow a maximum of 5 books from the previous three. Therefore Benghui can now borrow 15 books at a time using mine and my Mrs BB’s card too. He is ecstatic. I am happy too considering I can cut my trips to the library by 50%.
Anyway, early in the morning while I was still trying to sleep he was already trying to wake me. There was and still is nothing much left to cook in the house.
To keep Benghui occupied and also because there was nothing to cook, together we cooked white rice cake and rice vermicelli with Alagappa vegetable acar. This sent Mrs BB rushing to open the windows and doors to ‘let the smell out’.
In my opinion, it was actually quite nice, both the smell and the taste. I was so unprepared for the distinctive and exotic fragrance. It was like visiting an Indian friend’s house.
For your info, the white rice cake needs to be boiled for quite some time before it can soften. For the dry version, I cooked it like I would cook kampua except that i added Alagappa vegetable acar.

I experimented cooking the soup version and it was more palatable. For Mrs BB it was still a no-no.

To bad so many miles separate us. I would be glad to help you with taste testing.

Vegetable acar? Hmm…I prefer home made acar.
Looks yummy! as long as got something to fill the tummy, we should be thankful, right?
