Weekend Snapshot- street retail scenes

weekend snapshot

For this week’s Weekend Snapshot I highlight retail scenes that many of us take for granted. They form a very necessary part of the food chain supplying food to the consumers.

selling vege

This was taken at the bus stand near the mosque in Kuching. It was almost 1730 and they still had so much left over to sell. I would buy from them if I were not on holiday and therefore not cooking. They expose themselves to the fumes from the buses but it is a strategic location for selling to the bus passengers who are on their way home.

selling durian sarikei

Seasonal durian sellers. They will normally source for durians from the suburban areas and bring it to towns to sell. The price set for the fruits and the success of choosing a good fruit ultimately depends on the bargaining skill and experience of the buyer.

Hot-dog sellers are a welcome sight in any city. Cheap food without the multinational food chain outlet prices.

Carly Simon: Who did she refer to when she sang You Are So Vain?

I have alway loved Carly Simon’s music. She seemed to me the epitome of beauty and grace. Her selling point was her music. Being bankrupt in my youth I saved for some time to buy an original LP record by her. The only other original LP record I ever bought was by Tanya Tucker. I was also in love with Farrah Fawcett in those days :)

tanyaff

You’re So Vain” is a song written and performed by Carly Simon released in December 1972.

The song is a critical profile of a self-absorbed lover. The identity of the lover was always a mystery. At one time the search was rumored to include Mick Jagger, Cat Stevens, Warren Beatty, Kris Kristofferson, the unfaithful fiancé William Donaldson, and Simon’s ex-husband, James Taylor.

warren

The only hint she has ever given are that the person’s name includes the letters “E”, “A” and an “R”. Jagger, Beatty, and Taylor would remain as potential candidates; Stevens, Kristofferson, and Donaldson are all missing one or more of the requisite letters. If she is referring to the first name, then Warren Beatty is the only potential candidate).

Car accident and no insurance claim

My heart is still beating so fast. I have to cool down. Blogging is one way. When luck is against you, it is against you. Maybe it is best I stay in the house until this wind of misfortune blows over. But if I look at it from another angle, perhaps I have been lucky, very lucky.

new hair cut
I was in a good mood after having a haircut. Now I have no more ‘real’ hair. It is more like fuzz. I feel light headed. I think I will prefer this hairstyle from now on. Then I went to pick up Benghui. After picking up Benghui suddenly I heard a loud bang. My stationary car lurched forward. My immediate thought was for Benghui. He was wearing a seat belt and in a state of shock and confusion. There were tears in his eyes but I think he wasn’t hurt. Not in the real sense. Just shock. Then he started getting excited.

I had been knocked from behind by a Pajero. There is damage is to the back. The trunk cannot be opened. It will need to be sent to the workshop. After checking to make sure the children in the Pajero weren’t hurt, we exchanged telephone numbers. The driver was a lady and I tried my best to calm her down. We decided to settle it amicably without going through the hassle of insurance and making police reports.

coaster A coaster like this

Yesterday, Benghui tried to boil water. There was a coaster stuck to the bottom of the kettle. He was unaware of it. It was made of rubber. It melted and blocked the gas outlet of the gas stove. The burning acrid smell of the rubber and gas alerted us to the situation. The kettle was burnt, the house was filled with black smoke when I opened the kitchen door. I need a new gas stove.

All in all, God has been keeping a watch out for Benghui. Thank God for that.

Fish Leong vs Fong Fei-Fei

I first came across this post on fishman He raised an interesting question in my mind. Do I prefer Fish Leong or Fong/Foong Fei Fei as a singer. Listen to both tracks. Who do you prefer? If you had only one ticket to a concert, whose concert would you go to?

Personally I would prefer Fong Fei-fei.

Born in Taoyuan County’s Dasi Township, Fong Fei-fei, the stage name of Lin Ciou-luan, started her legendary career by winning the first prize of a radio station singing contest in 1968 when she was a junior high school student. She then moved to the capital to become a restaurant and dance hall singer and eventually acted in television dramas. In the 1970s, Fong became one of the most popular singers and TV variety show hosts in Taiwan. She was at the forefront of the latest technological breakthrough in television–live-broadcast shows–which brought her singing and entertaining talents to the fore, like no other celebrity before her.

Fish Leong or Liáng Jìngrú; born June 16, 1978 in Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia with family root in Shunde, Guangdong, China) is the stage name of Jasmine Leong, a Malaysian Chinese singer in the Mandarin pop scene who has had much success in Taiwan, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Japan. She is best known for her love-themed ballads, many of which have become popular KTV hits.

Photohunters : Reflection

photohunters2mo1

According to the dictionary, one of the meanings of reflection is a thought occurring in consideration or meditation and the act of reflecting or the state of being reflected.

This week the following entries are taken from a visit of some Chinese from Mainland China to an Iban longhouse in Sibu.

Part 1 :

chicken

The expression on the faces are a reflection of their sense of awe on being exposed to an ancient welcoming ceremony. This chicken wasn’t sacrificed at the request of the guests. Instead a feather was plucked.

beadwork

The intricate beadwork is a reflection of the hours she put in to create a handicraft. It normally takes about a month or so to create a shawl from beads.

river boat

The pic shows the reflection of a man on his boat taking a bath. The boat and the man are both reflected in the clean, crystal clear water fronting the longhouse.

Part 2 :

tiger sanctuary

This is from the inner sacred sanctuary of the Seven Tiger Star General Temple. The intense attention to detail is a reflection of hours of sacrifice put in by locals to create a place of worship. The construction cost was funded by donations and the workmen put in long hours after their own regular working hours to make it a reality.

small penis

A reflection of the flash from my camera on a dish called small penis. It costs about RM20.00 per kilogram and it actually looks like penis and it can ejaculate too!.It’s true. I am not joking. But you don’t get semen but just some salty water.

ambal close up small penis /ambal close up.

kuching boatman

This must be the longest photohunters post I have ever done. It is to make up for not taking part in last week’s hunt. Sorry. My blog unfortunately was down :) Have a great weekend every body.

Sibu Central Market

This is another of my hia pa sio eng ( too free nothing to do ) series. :)

sibu central market

A good blogger friend of mine blogged about reasons for blogging. It got me thinking about why I blog. I think a better question for me is why shouldn’t I blog if I enjoy doing so :) Why do you blog?

I learned a lesson the other day about not taking things for granted. I am referring to the Sibu Central Market. Some body told me he was amazed how ‘not wet’ our market place is. He was amazed at the level of cleanliness. Then it struck me he was speaking the truth.

market

It is indeed a big, orderly and clean place considering its prime function. Normally I just park in the multi-storey car park and take an elevator down. Buy everything I need in one place.

central market

Of course one doesn’t expect to buy expnsive branded goods here but if one is like me and has a limited budget this is the place. It is essential to be able to bargain though especially where clothes and bags are concerned.

durian isu

I had to act as interpreter and they loved the durians.

hawker food

It turned out that the humble kampua interested them a lot. You can see from this pic. They had heard about it before :)

kagkung jelly fish

For me, the day was a good day as I discovered the Central Market kangkung cuttlefish. I loved it. I will go there specifically for it now when I have the craving for it. Apparently the recipe has been handed down from the previous generation. Perhaps it is a tall tale but that is what I heard. I most definitely recommend it to any body who likes kangkung jellyfish. It comes with lightly deep-fried tauhu.

Yummy. The pic doesn’t look good. Apparently display is not important to this stall. It is the sauce. The winning formula. :)

Guests from China visit Sibu

I was having a drink at Tanahmas Hotel when I saw a lot of my friends. They invited me over to take some pics. I asked them the purpose of their gathering. They told me it was to celebrate the coming of lions from China and some YE’s ( YE = youth exchange ) from Japan. They had prepared a supper in their honor. I was intrigued as to what they would serve their guests.

Lets just say you have to feed visitors from China and Japan to supper. What would you serve them? Well, the Sibu Lions decided on the right formula.
