In my opinion, the national service program is a good program and the trainees will reap immense benefits from it. Many of the young today need an experience like this to toughen them up. However the media has been highlighting cases after cases of alleged ‘misconduct’ among the trainers. This has the effect of creating fear among the parents.

For a woman, chastity is still a highly prized commodity. Even as little girls, they are taught to sit properly and behave in a socially accepted manner. Sometimes, situations get out of hand, but if there is no pregnancy the situation is still under control.
For Malaysia, values are rapidly changing and an unwed mother doesn’t raise as many eye-brows as it once did. But it is still a grave problem to all concerned. To the couple and their families and of course, the ugly gossip that follows.
I only wish they knew the whereabouts of organizations who are ever willing to help them. I suspect they know but how to divulge such sensitive information? As time goes by, it becomes harder and harder to hide the truth. They get terrified and often seek illegal ways to solve the problem.

In the past, all the generations would live together. The first generation would help out around the house and command much respect. The grandfather would be the patriach of the family. His word was law.
As their health gradually deteriorated, the younger generation would take care of them until the day comes when they will be given a grand farewell. This arrangement worked well for the Chinese community. Those without families would be looked after by the community through the clan associations, benevolent societies etc.

Until midnight yesterday, mobile services provider centers here were packed to the brim with customers rushing to register their prepaid lines before the scheduled deadline, which ended at midnight yesterday.
Those who have not registered had their lines barred from today. They cannot send SMSes, make outgoing calls or access the wireless Internet service, but they can receive incoming calls. 30th December is the deadline to register. After that the lines will be terminated. All remaining credit and loyalty rewards points will be forfeited and the existing cell phone numbers will be taken away from them. (more…)
