Is there no solution for the floods in Sibu?

While I trust the government has plans to alleviate the flood problem, at the same time I see that its flood remedial efforts have been successful but in a way it has been counter productive too. The new raised roads have caused a host of new problems. The flood waters are now being hindered from flowing freely and the waters now have been displaced and sent to the houses instead.

I am back in Sibu. I hadn’t intended to come back so early but Benghui called me and told the water was rising fast. I forgot to leave the car keys at home. The other auto alarm key was spoiled in the last flood.

I wonder if this scene is repeated in quite a number of homes in Sibu today. Mrs BB took one look at the smelly, oily and dirty water and just sat down on the sofa, defeated. She had spent so much time and effort spring cleaning the house and compound just a week ago for the Chinese New Year.

I heard a neighbour banging at the gate. Oopi was barking like crazy. This grandma sort of person who is at least seventy years old warned me to bring my car to higher ground. I did as she asked me to. There were other cars already there. At first I thought it wasn’t necessary but half an hour later, I realized I owe her a big favor.

I really don’t know how to feel. From early morning I have been plotting and scheming so as not to get caught up in the flood waters. I have had to brave myself to drive through flooded roads and say a silent prayer each and every time.

I have asked my friends what they will remember most about Sibu. Sibu food and Sibu floods. Today the water was quite high and flowing into the drains of my house. It used to happen every ten years or so but now it happens almost every couple of months.

Seems like the ugly nightmare is over. Look at the level of water in my drain. It is almost back to normal.

Every body was expecting the worst yesterday but it didn’t happen. There must have been a collective sigh of relief all over the central region. Earlier the region was spooked by a warning from Dr George Chan. The next flood alert is from Dec 21st to Dec 29th
Today the flood is not apparent. Except for snails climbing up my blinds and the dirt, it seems like an ordinary day. However in the low-lying areas, the waters are still there and swirling especially in the inner city. I dread to think of their hardships and discomfort on this day. The business district seems to be drier now.
