Effective July 1st, retirement age for civil service raised to 58

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi announced today that after taking into consideration the impact on job opportunities for fresh graduates, the retirement age has been extended to 58.

This piece of news will surely be welcomed by many members of the civil service. I won’t assume I can understand how they feel until I reach the age but I know this piece of news will have deep repercussions in the lives of families all over the country.

60 years retirement age, Cuepacs and the Malaysian civil service

sibu road at night

On Wednesday night, I was with a group of friends and we discussed among other stuff, religious and social issues. Thursday night however is usually reserved for a different set of friends. Both sets of friends are oblivious of each other but are all my close friends.

All kinds of unfair speculation

The coffee shops are rife with every body speculating the parties involved in the police probe on gangsterism spear-headed by Bukit Aman. The IGP Tan Sri Musa Hasan has said investigations have already begun. The Chinese daily, Sing Chew Jit Poh also speculated as to the identities involved in the probe further fuelling the speculation.

New land premium lower: 99-year lease possible in Sarawak

The above topic will be the hottest topic of discussion in Sarawak today. It has been a bone of contention between the people and the state government. It would not be too imaginative for me to say that this land premium issue has prior to this alienated the state government from a segment of the citizens.

There used to be a joke. *Have you signed the petition requesting the state government to give more clarification on the land premium issue? We better do it soon before the state government sets a premium for petitions to the state government.*

1. Abolish the Efficiency Level Assessment (PTK)

2. Increase of the civil servant retirement age from 56 to 60 years.

3. Fully-paid maternity leave to be extended to cover seven children instead of the current five.

Pay hike would help alleviate corruption

In the press today I read and applaud Vincent Goh’s (BN-Pelawan) comment on the current situation in the state and the role of the public and the police force.

I agree with almost everything Vincent Goh (BN-Pelawan) said and I only want to add one comment.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hasan in Sarawak

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan flew in yesterday to Sibu from Kuching and had a closed door session with Sibu police chief ACP Nicholas Sebastian who gave a briefing at the divisional police headquarters. He came to Sarawak to see and hear for himself what actually is going on. He must have been perturbed by Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing’s speech in the dewan rakyat last week.

Since then, many parties have come forward to give their views from the politicians, the civil servants, humble rakyat and most recently the chief minister of Sarawak himself.

But after this visit, there will be changes. We can be sure of that. IGP. Tan Sri Musa Hasan has hinted there will be changes to overcome weaknesses in the enforcement of criminal law in Sarawak. However no details are available.

theborneopost

Meanwhile it was reported in The Star that a special task force supervised by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan will be set up to look into claims of widespread gangsterism in several areas in Sarawak. The members would comprise officers from Bukit Aman as well as the state contingent headquarters.

The IGP Tan Sri Musa Hasan said he had come to Sarawak with Deputy CID director Dept Comm Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar to assess the situation and will personally monitor all operations in the state but the police still needs the public’s help and co-operation.

The buzz has been going on for the past few weeks. Is he or isn’t he? The quantum involved and the timing? This question has been on the minds of most civil servants since our PM has verbally agreed in principle to a pay raise.

In Putra Jaya, the Prime Minister revealed that the government was reviewing the retirement age presently set at 56. It is a good move and should be hailed as consistent with changing times.

With better health and a longer life-span, many civil servants are as proficient in their duties as their younger counterparts and in many cases due to their wealth of experience much sought after. Read more »
