Samy Vellu said toll rates in Malaysia were one of the cheapest in the world, with PLUS charging an average of 13.6 sen per km, compared with 35.57 sen per km in the Philippines, 27.62 sen in China, 22.76 sen in Thailand and 14.8 sen in Indonesia.

Samy Vellu said the Government had paid RM479.7mil in toll subsidy in the past six years.

Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin ibni Almarhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah of Terengganu took the oath of office as the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, coincidentally on Dec 13.

Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah of Kedah also took the oath of office as the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Constitutionally, the King’s position is rotated every five years among the traditional Malay rulers of nine states.

When I was a kid, my mum would tell me to behave or she could call a policeman to come and catch me. Even today, I subconsciously sit upright and check to see if I am wearing my seatbelt when I see one. So in my warped mind, a policeman is a pillar of exemplary moral behavior.

Thus, it was an eye-opener when I read that police chief Tan Sri Musa Hassan reminded all policewomen, single and married to behave properly when they are with their male colleagues.The Inspector-General also told them not to become too engrossed with promotions, so much so that they forget their families. Shahrizat says no!

KUALA LUMPUR: Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil yesterday disagreed with a programme in Terengganu to give awards to men practising polygamy.

Shahrizat said the intention was open to misinterpretation although the intention was honorable.

“I don’t think there’s a need for it. I know that the programme is supposed to encourage men to help single mothers. But people may see it as an effort to promote polygamy.”

Shahrizat spoke to reporters after presenting Open Minds Yayasan Nur scholarship grants to 50 children with special needs yesterday.

It was reported in the Berita Harian that the Terengganu government has announced a special award for men who marry four wives. But to marry four wives and receive the special award…the man’s second and third wife must be single mothers with children.

No mingling allowed, says Prisons Dept

In commenting on claims by Seputeh MP Teresa Kok in an English daily yesterday that juvenile delinquents who are being detained in prisons are not provided with counselling or rehabilitation, Prisons Department public relations officer Abdul Razak Darus yesterday clarified that it was not true and also the department has never allowed hard-core criminals to have contact with juvenile prisoners.
