This is Lai Meng in a scene from Money Not Enough 2. What shall we do with our parents when they grow old and feeble? Will you sign them up in an old folks home? Would you like to be assigned to an old folks home? Remember what goes around comes around.

But real issues are discussed in this movie. A Singapore producton, it is a hard-hitting jab at the realities of modern living and our evolving modern day values.

Lai Meng as usual is at her best in front of a camera. I can remember her back to the days of the weekly series, Empat Sekawan or Li Kor Bo Wa Eh Kor literally translated meaning your troubles are not mine. She has outlived most of her own peers on television. I wonder what happened to Ah Ying. Does anybody know?

Lai Meng is on the list of artistes who receives pension under a scheme for ageing artistes.

One of South America’s few remaining uncontacted indigenous tribes has been spotted and photographed on the border between Brazil and Peru.

The romantic side of me wonders how life must be like for them but in a second the notion is gone. Where are the comforts we take for granted every day? The medical security net which our governments provide, basic food available upon payment, wages in exchange for an honest day’s work.

The pictures, taken from an aeroplane, show red-painted tribe members brandishing bows and arrows.

Disease is also a risk, as members of tribal groups that have been contacted in the past have died of illnesses that they have no defence against, ranging from chicken pox to the common cold.

“Dong Zhi” literally means “arrival of winter”. It coincides with the winter solstice. This system is based on the sun’s tilt. The sun is at the Tropic of Capricorn and it is the longest night of the year. Dong Zhi is the day when sunshine is weakest and daylight shortest. The coming of winter is celebrated by families and is traditionally the time when farmers and fishermen gather food in preparation for the coming cold season.

We had a gathering today. Mostly men and a single woman. The topic went to men and their role in a modern home. The question was: Is the man still the king of his castle?

Once every three weeks or so, Mrs Bengbeng would look at the refrigerator and exclaim how dirty a refrigerator can be. Then she will defrost it and we will have to cook what’s left over or throw it away.

I knew my three day holiday was too good to be true. She woke up, mopped the floor and went off to visit some friends. ” Some project thingy,” and she disappeared. “Throw away whatever is left over in the fridge or cook it.” Of course she knew I wouldn’t throw anything away.

Tomorrow is marketing day.

Buffalo Race

The normally quiet town of Lawas became alive when its people turned up to watch the buffalo race ridden by both the young and old. It was a joyous occasion and there were shouts of laughter when some buffaloes went in the wrong direction or didn’t know what to do :)
