Not many may have been aware but yesterday was a historical day in Malaysian politics. The grand old man of Malaysian politics has stepped down. Always blunt, gruff and straight to the point, he was a newsman’s darling.

Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing explains his speech in parliment

Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing

If Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing were standing for election in Sibu today he would win. Only today of course. The electorate are fickle and change their minds fast. However among my friends he is now perceived as a voice for the people. They feel his efforts should be applauded. Syabas to Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

In a telephone interview, Tiong, who is also a Justice of the Peace, said it was his duty to speak out. He said the people of Sarawak should not live in fear anymore. He also mentioned the names of two senior police officers in Sibu and praised them for their efforts in fighting and controlling crimes. Mylongkang too has heard of efforts by some officers in Sibu and they are a credit to the police force. Syabas to them too from mylongkang and friends.

PAS Youth and its Ambassadors of Love and Relief plan

Ambassadors of love and relief

PAS Youth has done it again this time. I applaud them for coming out with this initiative. Catchy phrase too…ambassadors of love and relief.

The plan is to persuade prostitutes throughout the country to leave their profession and turn over a new leaf. Using volunteers who would play the roles of counselors, the team will approach prostitutes and show them the the error of their ways. Read more »

SUPP pinpoints weaknesses in polls failure.

SUPP today released a booklet entitled ‘ SUPP - The Way Forward.’

The booklet stated that the 2006 state election exposed the party’s weaknesses in mobilizing its cadres, failure in disseminating party information and policy to members and voters. The party was also perceived as having lost its influence in the state government. The urban voters believed that SUPP’s role as the ‘Chinese Voice’ had weakened.

Fuel hikes were also partly to blame. Indecisiveness on the part of the party as to choice of candidates had also cost the party many votes especially in the Bintangor and Engkilili area.

Another unresolved issue that persists to this day is the land lease issue. The opposition had taken advantage of this issue to distort the situation and mislead the voters. Issues relating to Chinese education, funding, relocation of existing premises and use of English to teach Maths and Science were fully exploited by the opposition.

All these made the party seem weak and ineffective. However the booklet said the state election results were not a rejection of the SUPP but a wake-up call to serve the people better.

You can come and take over my job.

MCA Public Services and Complaint Department head Datuk Michael Chong yesterday expressed frustration for being criticized by Seputeh MP, Teresa Kok, over the way his department handles Ah Long cases.

Chong said Kok should not have made those statements to the media without fully understanding the situation.

“It is not my department’s place to refer Ah Long cases to the police on the borrowers’ behalf,” said Chong. Read more »
